Abstract
This work looks to build knowledge around technology change in “buyer-driven” production networks – networks where firms in lower capital-intensive production are interconnected into regional and global buyers. It focuses on e-commerce which is transforming buyer-driven networks through digital platforms, as well as the digitalisation of distribution and interactive online customer relationships.
China’s cross-border e-commerce along the ‘belt and road’ is one of the leading initiatives in this area. It is particularly crucial because it includes a number of pilots and experiments that are liable to shape the norms of e-commerce in the future. In this presentation I will examine the implication of current activities, including the evolution of experimental cross-border zones in China, the nature of logistics hubs in Asia, and the way that local e-commerce platforms and “last mile” logistics are evolving.
